Closed since its construction in 1660, the Citadelle de Marseille is embarking on a gradual opening of its spaces to the people of Marseille. Its objective is to transform this 5-hectare historical monument into a destination—a place for encounters, exchanges, work, research, discoveries, and celebrations, where a plurality of communities, voices, and narratives converge. At the heart of this opening is the desire to involve residents in creating new uses for this iconic fortification.

To achieve this, the Citadelle de Marseille has been working since 2021 on a comprehensive approach to mediation aimed at opening up spaces for discovery, dialogue, learning, participation, and collaboration, including:

  • Projects dedicated to young audiences, aimed at discovering and transmitting the know-how involved in the restoration of the site
  • The implementation of participatory practices at the heart of creative projects
  • Opening up spaces for dialogue with citizens within the axes of development
