landscaping the north gardens
The Citadelle de Marseille has designed the development of its northern gardens, which are part of an Aire de Mise en Valeur de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (AVAP), taking into account the many preservation imperatives incumbent upon it:
- Respect the appearance of the historic monument and therefore select plants whose size is compatible with the landscaped areas.
- Use plants that are compatible with the climate transition.
- Select plants whose functionalities enable them to manage soil pollution in an urban environment.
- Ensure that the landscaping is compatible with the presence and use of the public.
- Pass on the responsibility for preservation and restoration to all site users.
This development differs from those that are usually found in listed monuments in that it takes into account the soil in the same way as the buildings. Alongside the various players, production workshops and research laboratories present on the site, the artist Louise Nicollon des Abbayes was invited to transpose the scientific, anthropological and plastic modes of investigation associated with a personal practice of ceramics, experimented in particular with the materiality of Marseille's industrial landscapes, to open them up to the singularity of the site. She has created a ceramic model of the site and its memory, in the style of an orientation table. It will be installed in the gardens of the Citadelle.
